The Blessing  of the Fleet is a centuries-old tradition originating in southern European, predominantly Catholic, fishing, communities.  A blessing from the local priest was meant to ensure a safe and bountiful season.

The Port Aransas community has embraced this tradition by celebrating "The Blessing of the Fleet" in the harbor.   

Decorated boats of all kinds parade around the Port Aransas harbor in search of a blessing for a bountiful harvest in the upcoming season. They also pray to be safely returned home from their journey out to sea.  It is also a reverent time to honor those lives lost at sea.
